President Wickramesinghe Confirms Elections in 2024 duringBudget Debate in Sri Lanka

President Ranil Wickramesinghe, addressing Parliament during the budget debate , has confirmed that both Presidential and Parliamentary elections will take place next year. He emphasised that there would be no postponement of the elections.

The President’s announcement provides clarity on the electoral timeline for the coming year, addressing speculations and uncertainties regarding the schedule of key elections. As the budget debate progresses, discussions on various aspects of the government’s policies and plans for the upcoming year are taking centre stage in Parliament.

President Wickramesinghe is currently delivering a special statement in Parliament, addressing several crucial matters, including the country’s economy, the ongoing debate on the 2024 Budget, the ongoing the crisis in Sri Lankan cricket.The President’s address comes on the heels of the parliamentary approval of the Second Reading of the 2024 Budget by a majority of 45 votes.

Additionally, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the terms of the suspension of Sri Lankan cricket governing body on November 10, citing breaches of its obligations as a member.In response to the cricket turmoil, President Wickramesinghe established a Cabinet sub- committee to examine the gazette notifications issued by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, appointing an Interim Committee for SLC and suspending the existing cricket governing body.

The President’s statement is expected to shed light on the government’s stance on these issues and provide clarity on the way forward.
