On May Day 2025, workers across Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka came together in a series of rallies demanding justice and rights. Significant demonstrations took place from Mannar to Jaffna, highlighting the struggles faced by the community.
In Mannar, local associations organised events that included a special Mass and community activities focused on the economic hardships and territorial encroachments affecting the area. A mass protest led by the People’s Planning Union spotlighted critical issues such as environmental destruction, land grabs, and the marginalisation of Tamils. Protesters called for the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and sought justice for the disappeared.
Meanwhile, in Jaffna, a large rally organised by the Ceylon Teachers’ Union addressed issues like teacher salary anomalies, the plight of the forcibly disappeared, and the demand for Tamil self-determination. These demonstrations reflected a united call for justice, equality, and an end to systemic repression, with participation from various trade unions, student groups, and civil society organisations.
