What are some reasons that led to the migration of the Tamil diaspora?
Tamil migration happened in several waves, driven by different circumstances:
– **Colonial-era labor migration:** Under British rule, many Tamils from India were recruited or coerced to work on plantations in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Malaya, Singapore, and elsewhere.
– **Trade and employment:** Tamils moved across the Indian Ocean for commerce, public-service jobs, and later professional and educational opportunities.
– **Post-independence policies in Sri Lanka:** Discrimination and reduced access to citizenship, education, and government jobs pushed many Sri Lankan Tamils to leave.
– **Civil war and violence:** The Sri Lankan conflict (1983–2009), including anti-Tamil pogroms and violence, drove refugees and asylum seekers to countries such as Canada, the UK, France, and Australia.
– **Family reunification and study:** Once communities were established abroad, relatives joined them; students and skilled workers also migrated for education and work.
