Forced disappearance,public demonstration demanding justice

Families of the forcibly disappeared in Sri Lanka continue to face significant challenges as they seek truth and justice. Since February 20, 2017, they have engaged in ongoing protests, primarily in the Northern Province, demanding accountability for the enforced disappearances of their loved ones, many of whom went missing during the final stages of the civil war in 2009.

Despite the establishment of the Office of Missing Persons (OMP), these families have expressed dissatisfaction with its efforts and have called for an independent international inquiry instead. Their protests, known as “poaraattam,” are largely led by women and have persisted for nearly 3,000 days, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth.

The families refuse to accept compensation without answers, driven by the hope of finding closure for their missing relatives. As of 2025, they continue to advocate for justice amid ongoing political dynamics in the country, particularly under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
