On 26 July , students activists from Inter University Student’s Federation (IUSF) gathered at Colombo and launched a protest. They were seeking the immediate release of two students activists who have been in remand custody for over 200 days, namely, the Chairman of Student Union of the University of Kelaniya Kelum Mudaannyake, and Student Activist Dilshan Harshana.

Police and Crowd Control Units was stationed at the premises, and the university Students were given a considerable time period to vacate. The university students then attempted to proceed towards the University Grant Commission, and in order to prevent them from moving forward, Sri Lanka Police used water cannons to disperse university student activists who were protesting.

The Inter University Student’s Federation (IUSF) protest is being held over the several key demands, including the detention of its members, Kelum Mudaannyake and Dilshan Harshana, reduction in the cost of living and the abolishment of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). The university students will also call on the Government to discard the newly proposed Prevention of Terrorism Act and to provide university students with the necessary facilities to continue their education.
