British Tamils gather in Parliament Square,London for 42th anniversary of Black July
Black July refers to the anti-Tamil riots that occurred in Sri Lanka in July 1983, marking a significant and tragic event in the country’s history. The riots led to widespread violence against the Tamil community, resulting in thousands of deaths, injuries, and the displacement of many more. This event is often seen as a pivotal moment that escalated the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, ultimately leading to a prolonged civil war.
Thousands of people gathered in Parliament Square, London 23/07/2025, with heavy memories of the genocide of Tamils, participating in a protest. Documentary photographs of the Tamil genocide were also displayed. This event was organised by the Tamil Youth Organisation and the Tamil Coordination Committee in Britain.
As we remember Black July 42 years on, it’s important to reflect on the impact of such violence on communities and the importance of reconciliation, understanding, and healing in the aftermath of such tragedies. Commemorating this event can serve as a reminder of the need to work towards a peaceful and inclusive society where all communities can coexist harmoniously.
