The death of Sathsara Nimesh in police custody at the Welikada Police Station has drawn particular attention, along with the arrest of Mohamad Rusdi under the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act. These incidents have intensified the longstanding distrust towards law enforcement, a sentiment rooted in the country’s history of civil conflict and systemic impunity.
The role of social media has also been pivotal in this context, as misinformation spreads rapidly, amplifying public anger and complicating the situation. Notably, the Thiniyawela incident to highlighted how unverified claims can escalate tensions and exacerbate societal divisions.
Experts stress the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within the police force, emphasising accountability and the importance of community-centred policing strategies. There is a growing consensus that without addressing these systemic issues, the cycle of violence and mistrust will likely persist in Sri Lanka. Moreover, the country has seen a troubling increase in shooting incidents, further highlighting the urgent need for measures to restore public safety and ensure justice for victims of violence.
